Starting in December, Mexico is decorated with poinsettias, which are called "noche buena" (from the Spanish phrase that means "good night" referring to Christmas Eve). Mexico is the origin of the poinsettia which represents a symbol of the new life that they believe the fallen warriors receive, returning as hummingbirds and butterflies to drink the nectar. A modern Mexican legend says that the poinsettia was once a weed that miraculously turned into a beautiful flower so that a child could present it to the infant Jesus.
The traditional star-shaped piñata is broken by children during the Posadas. The piñata represents Satan who has all the goods of the world, decorated to attract people. There are most traditionally seven points to represent the seven cardinal sins. The stick represents faith which defeats evil and releases the treasure for all.
